Kullu DM announces new road traffic rules to prevent road accidents

Shimla, October 7: After three accidents that occurred within three days of the opening of the Atal Tunnel alerted the authorities, the Kullu District Magistrate announced new traffic rules aimed at curbing road accidents. The regulations will be rigorously implemented, and those violating them will face criminal sanctions in accordance with Art. 144 CrPC. Kullu DM Dr Richa Verma in an order issued on Wednesday said that a complete ban would be imposed in case of unnecessary traffic in the emergency exit tunnel. Moreover, the administration has also banned commuters from taking photos and videos from 200 meters before the south portal to the end of the tunnel.

This 9.02 km long tunnel, built at an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level, is the longest tunnel in the world built at such a high altitude. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 3. The tunnel reduced the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km and reduced the travel time by 4-5 hours.
