Ghana’s aviation sector has returned to full health

President Akufo-Addo has announced that Ghana’s aviation sector has successfully bounced back from the disruption caused by the emergence of the Covid-19 virus.

He attributed this recovery largely to a significant increase in air passenger traffic, both for domestic and international travel.

The President made these remarks at the commissioning of the Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi on Friday, May 10, in the company of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and other dignitaries.

“Ghana has recorded significant overall growth in passenger traffic on domestic and international routes. At the end of 2023, international passenger traffic amounted to 2,914,661 people compared to 2,328,758 people in 2019, an increase of 25%. In turn, domestic passenger traffic increased from 690,314 people in 2019 to 775,662 people at the end of 2023.

“These data mean that the aviation sector has fully recovered from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and is back on the growth path. My government will continue to pay the necessary attention to enable this sector to compete fairly with neighboring countries in the West African region and beyond.

“It is therefore important that all stakeholders come on board and play their roles to ensure Ghana becomes an aviation hub in the region.” President Akufo-Addo declared.

The airport will begin full operations later this year, once operational to make room for the expansion of the runway and the dismantling of old facilities.

The facility, currently managed by the Ghana Airport Company Limited, is currently undergoing testing of equipment required for both domestic and international flights.

The airport, which can accommodate over eight hundred thousand passengers annually, mainly from the northern and middle belt regions, is expected to meet the growing demand for air travel.
